What Is An Ostomy – Stoma – Ileostomy?  

I always get asked the question whats a colon? Whats your large bowel? Whats a bag? I was even asked do you wee and poo in the bag?

I wanted to explain exactly what I have, what this bag is on my stomach and what a Stoma – Ileostomy – Ostomy is.

I have an Ileostomy this is because I have had my large bowel (Colon) removed I know longer have a colon and instead my body extracts waste via the small intestine only. An ileostomy is a surgically created opening in the small intestine, usually at the end of the ileum. The intestine is brought through the abdominal wall to form a stoma. Ileostomies may be temporary or permanent, and may involve removal of the entire colon.

The surgery I have had done is called a colectomy and as you can see from the diagram below this is before and after my surgery:
